Scott County Schools will host the first ever math camp for students this summer at Scott High School. The camp will run from June 10 through June 14 and will present math activities and tasks to approximately 30 incoming freshmen. The purpose of the camp is to expose camp participants to the Scott High campus and math faculty. The camp will feature mathematics applications in real-world scenarios in a camp type atmosphere. Students will have the opportunity to participate in competitions and tasks that involve the application of mathematics, science, and technology by using such tools as graphing calculators, drones and robotic balls called Sphero’s. On one of the days during the camp, students will also be making a trip to the American Museum of Science and Energy in Oak Ridge to participate in some of the programs offered by the museum. At the end of the week, participants will receive a camp shirt to commemorate their weeklong camp experience. There will also be prize drawings during the week. The math camp will be conducted by a combination of high school and middle school math teachers. It is hoped that this camp will give the camp participants a positive head-start into their high school math experience.
